The world’s but a stage! Kingly is he who struts for a while, then exits in style! Then together again, we shall royally this blessed earth roam!

Traditional Korean jultagi (줄타기), or eoreum (어름), is a distinctive form of tightrope walking that is accompanied by music and witty dialogue between the tightrope walker and an earthbound clown. The tightrope walker executes a variety of acrobatic feats along with jokes, mimicry, songs and dance, while a clown engages the tightrope walker in humorous banter and musicians play to accompany the entertainment.

eorum/jultagi, as part of the six Namsadang nori, is one of South Korea’s Important Intangible Cultural Properties, and is still performed during holidays and festivals, and you can go see it, and it is amazing !!

i mean these guys are doing everything from basic tightrope walking to crazy jumps, sitting or lying down on the rope, leaping from balancing on a knee to land sitting cross-legged, doing those (potentially painful??) jumps like dude on the right… all while hollering witty banter with the clown down below  it is so neat  it is so neat

Two clowns living in the Chosun Dynasty get arrested for staging a play that satirizes the king. They are dragged to the palace and threatened with execution, but are given a chance to save their lives if they can make the king laugh.

I have so many feelings about The King and the Clown! It’s basically a love triangle between two minstrels and the king. I laughed, cheered, cried, fell in love. It’s hard to put to words why. I suppose it’s mostly because of the joy of life and performing that comes across. And there’s minstrels and friendship and love and acrobatics and ENTIRELY TOO MANY FEELINGS.

I’d like to say that everything’s beautiful and nothing hurts, but that’d be a lie.

someone is having feelings about the king and the clown and the joy of life and performing and friendship and love !! there are hearts in my eyes !!

Day 14 - a movie that no one would expect you to love - The King and the Clown

In my asian horror film class, I thought Kam Wu-seong did a pretty good acting job in R-Point, and  looking him up, I found this gem. It’s about a King who falls in love with a clown (minstrel) whose troupe satires the king’s court. It’s a political story where these street performers, even lower than commoners, draw out the emotions of the crazed king and everything starts falling apart.

I recommend this to EVERYONE. The cinematography, set design, costumes are all gorgeous. Seriously, it’s beautiful. But even better is the acting and screenplay. The emotions carried through the words and actions…I love they way the story unfolds. It’s extremely captivating. I love every bit of this movie, it breaks my heart and sets it free….I wanted to put this movie on my list because it doesn’t seem like a film of everyone’s flavor, but I think everyone should give it a chance.

originally i was going to reblog without the commentary, but i agree so much with basically everything in it that, um just deal. (and go watch it.) it’s very shakespeare-as-seen-by-the-rude-mechanicals, a love letter to the ancient (come baaack) namsadang tradition, and the costumes and colors and sets in this movie make me want to die
